All flat products are made from steel slabs which are heated and passed through rollers.

Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled refers to whether they were heated at a temperature above the recrystallisation temperature of steel or below. The recrystallisation temperature is the temperature at which the grain structure is altered.

Hot rolling allows the metal to be more malleable meaning it can be rolled thinner in a single pass. But it can cool unevenly and give rise to tolerances. Cold rolling is usually done at room temperature and provides a more stable finish with lower tolerance.

Temperature and the quality of the rolling surface play a large part in the quality of the finished product.

Hot Rolled products can be further transformed into Chequer and Hot Dipped Galvanised Coils, Sheets and Plates. Hot dipped products are products that have been dipped into hot zinc to increase their resistance to corrosion.

Usage of Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Steel

Hot Rolled products are used in construction, shipbuilding, transport, pressure vessels, boilers, gas containers and for tube and pipe manufacture. Hot rolled products with a diamond or tear drop pattern are called Chequer flat products and as these are anti-slip surface, they are used for industrial floors in warehouses, stairs and truck beds.

Hot Dipped Galvanized products are also popular with fabricators as they are readily suitable for pressing, forming, welding and bending. They have many uses such as domestic appliances, automotive, lighting, wall elements, profiles and roofing.

Cold Rolled products have excellent electromagnetic properties and are popular with fabricators as they are readily suitable for pressing, forming, welding and bending. Their many fabrication uses include domestic appliances, automotive, lighting, electrical components, wall elements, profiles and roofing.
